Suspect dead after SWAT standoff

HOUSTON The scene began unfolding at the home on Carvel at Belle Green around 1:15am with a disturbance call. Family members say a man threatened to kill them and himself. Those family members escaped the home.

When police arrived, they say the suspect started waving a weapon at them. SWAT was called. Police say the suspect fired at a SWAT vehicle and also shot one of the police cars on the scene. No one was hurt.

After a few hours of negotiations, the suspect stopped talking with police.

"We thought negotiations were going smoothly. Whenever you're talking to someone in a situation like this, you're hopeful, but for whatever reason, he stopped talking to us all of the sudden," said Captain Bruce Williams with the Houston Police Department. "We sent a remote camera in and found him on the bed. He had taken his own life."

Police say suspect was 18 years old with no history of mental illness and no history with Houston police.

Around 10 homes in the area were evacuated during the standoff.
