Five-car fiery crash on causeway in LA

State police are investigating a fiery, five-vehicle crash that shutdown the northbound lanes of the Causeway across Lake Pontchartrain for nearly three hours. The wreck was preceded by a less serious accident Thursday night in the same general area of the Causeway, about four or five miles from the north shore.

Causeway General Manager Robert Lambert says one of the five vehicles involved in the second crash was a motorist-assist patrol vehicle that may have been responding to the first accident.

Three people, including the patrol officer, were taken to north shore hospitals with injuries described by Lambert as apparently not life-threatening. He said three of the vehicles caught fire as a result of the crash.
