Firefighters battled an intense blaze at a house near downtown. It broke out around 11:45 on at a home on Lubbock near White around 11:45pm. The two-story wood-frame home was filled with flames and smoke. Fire crews had to call for four more engines to help out.

The homeowner was taken to the hospital with second degree burns on his hands. One of his tenants helped pull him and a dog to safety. A second dog may have died inside the house.

"I came out the back door to see what it was and that's when I saw the flames coming out of the windows," said neighbor Kevin Harrell.

Neighbors say they weren't surprised by what happened because the home was rundown. Arson is investigating.
