Casey Pelfrey, 19, died in front of her three-year-old child. Investigators say Shaffer is the child's father.
The investigation so far has revealed that Shaffer had been at a local bar, when he borrowed a friend's truck and drove to Pelfry's home. Police say Pelfry went out to speak with Shaffer and took her son with her. At some point, police say Shaffer took out a handgun and shot Pelfry one time, killing her. Shaffer then turned the gun on himself.
"This has been happening over the course of several years, they've been off and on," said an investigator on the scene. "Then again, there was nothing to say specifically what caused this incident tonight other than he just showed up unexpectedly."
According to family members, the pair had apparently been having some ongoing issues with each over the last couple of years.
Pelfrey died at the scene. Shaffer was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
The child was not injured.
