Alaska volcano continues to erupt

ANCHORAGE, AK Alaska Volcano Observatory Geologist Tina Neal says the volcano's ash plume on Tuesday was going in a northeasterly direction, right over Dutch Harbor.

But she says there are no reports of ash being a problem in the large fishing community.

Neal says it appears that the plume is mostly steam and volcanic gas, and doesn't have a lot of ash.

She says the volcano's seismic activity also has diminished a bit.

The 3,500-foot volcano, called the Okmok Caldera, is located on Omnak Island, about 60 miles west of Dutch Harbor.

The volcano, which is 6 miles across and contains more than a dozen cones, began exploding on Saturday.
