Child dies after being left in vehicle

HOUSTON Investigators tell us the two-year-old boy was left in the vehicle late Sunday afternoon. He wasn't found until almost an hour later.

Homicide detectives say they were dispatched to the Somerset apartments on Tidwell near Guhn on reports a child was found unconscious in a vehicle. Investigators say paramedics attempted to revive the child. The two-year-old boy was then taken to Spring Branch medical center, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators tell us the child was being cared for by a relative, possibly an uncle, who brought the child to the pool. At some point during the day, police say, he left and forgot he had left the child in the car.

After interviewing the relative, investigators believe the child was left in the vehicle for about an hour. There were three other children in the vehicle, as well. They were OK.

Police say the relative believed the children had gone with another relative to the store and didn't realize they were still in the car.

"I can never imagine leaving my baby in the car," said one resident with whom we spoke. "It's just really sad."

The child's body will be taken to the medical examiner's office to determine a cause of death. In the meantime, police continue interviewing relatives. At this point, no charges have been filed.
