Biodiesel workshops offered again

The LSU AgCenter, citing strong demand, is hosting another round of workshops to teach people how to make their own biodiesel. Bill Carney, the AgCenter's environmental educator, says there was standing room only at a series of workshops in June. The next series of one-day workshops are set for July 29-31, with plans by the AgCenter to host advanced sessions on biodiesel production this fall.

The sessions come as the average price of diesel hit a near-record $4.684 a gallon in Louisiana on Wednesday, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. That's nearly $1.87 a gallon more than a year ago.

Carney says it takes at least $800 in equipment to make batches of 25 to 30 gallons of biodiesel.
