Police officer killed in wreck in Galveston

GALVESTON, TX Galveston police Sergeant Jeffrey Wyers was killed in a motorcycle crash in Texas City yesterday afternoon. Authorities say an SUV pulled out in front of him as he was driving southbound on Highway 146. His wife, Crystal, a Galveston County sheriff's deputy, was also in the vehicle. She was seriously injured. Both were off duty at the time.

The Wyers were married Friday night during a sunset ceremony in Hitchcock. Sergeant Wyers sent an email tendering his retirement from the force just two hours before the fatal crash.

"He was truly a very strong leadership figure within the Galveston Police Department," said Chief Phillip Morris with the Galveston Police Department. "Sergeant Wyers is going to be sadly miss in this organization."

It's unclear if the driver of that SUV will face any charges. Sergeant Wyers is survived by his three daughters.
