Wind energy expected to grow

WASHINGTON Wind energy today accounts for only about 1 percent of the nation's electricity. The government report to be released Monday said by 2030 wind energy could account for 300,000 megawatts of power, or about 20 percent of the total electricity generated.

The report envisions more than 75,000 new wind turbines, many of them larger than what is in use today, and expansion of transmission systems to move power from high-wind areas to other parts of the country.

Texas is the nation's leader in wind-generated power.
