UH softball rolls in 1st round of C-USA tourney

HOUSTON With two outs and two runners on base in the first inning, Wagner hit her shot over the left-field fence. She scored junior Elaina Nordstrom and freshman Jennifer Klinkert after both runners reached base on walks.

Wagner's home run was her 18th this season, erasing the pervious record of 17 held by Kristen Glowacz in 2005. Wagner also tied the C-USA single-season home run mark.

Klinkert added a grand slam in the sixth inning, giving her 14 home runs for the season,. scoring three baserunners who walked. They were three of 10 Cougars walks during the game.

UH closed out the game in the sixth inning when freshman Baillie Lott reached base on an error by the Memphis second baseman, scoring pinch runner freshman Katy Beth Sherman and senior Angel Shamblin.

Shamblin tied the single-season wins record, improving to 31-2. She gave up two hits, one run and struck out five.

The Tigers scored one run in the third inning on a home run from Maddie McKinkey.

With the win, Houston advanced to the second round of the tournament against No. 5 East Caroliuna at 4:30 pm on Friday. Prior to the Houston game, No. 2 seed Central Florida will play No. 6 seed UTEP at 2pm.

The winner of the two Saturday games will play in the C-USA Championship at 1:30 p.m., Saturday.
