Wild shoot-out on busy San Antonio street

SAN ANTONIO, TX The shooting at about 3:30 p.m. on Monday prompted the lockdown of an elementary school and occurred near a high school. Bexar County Sheriff's deputies said that the injured man -- who was not identified -- was taken to a nearby hospital.

Sgt. Chris Burchell told the San Antonio Express-News for its Tuesday editions that deputies arrested at least five men, all known gang members, in connection with the incident.

Burchell said that the shooting began when the victim and the gang members argued. He said that after the victim and his friends shot at their rivals with BB guns, the rivals returned with machine guns, shooting at the victim and his two friends as they fled in a car.

The chase stopped when the victim suddenly pulled to the side of the street, about 500 feet from Candlemeadow Elementary School. Burchell said that the assailants tried to pull him from the car, but the man refused and he was shot several times in the head.

Even though the regular school day had ended, about 200 children still were participating in after-school activities at the time. So Principal Susan Peery ordered a campuswide lockdown after consulting with school police.
