Two Jazz Ensembles from HISD's Waltrip High School (1900 West 34th, 77018) both brought home first place trophies from the All Star Music Festival held in Orlando, Florida last weekend. In addition, the Waltrip High School Ram Band received top honors. The school's Symphonic Band, under the direction of Charlie Stephens, earned a "Superior Rating" and second place in the concert band portion of the contest and Waltrip's Concert Band, under the direction of Jesse Espinosa, earned an "Excellent Rating" and third place.

Waltrip students' Ivan Alvarado, Jacob Compean and Noel Compean also received individual trophies for their solo performances. Noel received two trophies for his solo performance in both the Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble competitions, a first in the history of the festival.

"We teach our young musicians to be versatile and flexible, and the All Star Music Festival gives students an opportunity to perform at a different venue than their home school auditorium along with other bands from out of state," said Waltrip's Band Director Jesse Espinosa. "The students came home with positive results and feedback from music experts that will help them continue improving their upcoming performances.

Approximately 80 students participated in the music festival at Orlando. The students raised their own funds to pay for their individual places on the trip.
