UH softball splits doubleheader vs. Baylor

HOUSTON The ninth-ranked Cougars move to 38-6 overall this season and 9-4 in the all-time series with the Bears.

Wagner opened game one for the Cougars hitting a grand slam, her 13th home run of the season. Juniors Jessica Valis and Katie Bush put the first runners on base off back-to-back singles and freshman Jennifer Klinkert loaded the bases after being walked.

Houston would put up four more runs on the board in the fourth inning. Two of those runs came from Wagner's 14th home run this season. The 14 home runs she has this season are currently tied for second in the single-season record books. She needs three more homers to tie Kristen Glowacz's single-season record of 17 in 2005.

Junior Elaina Nordstrom also hit a RBI double and Klinkert scored Nordstrom on a single to cap the scoring in the inning.

Houston recorded 13 hits in the game, continuing a streak of four straight games with double-digit hits.

Senior Angel Shamblin (23-2) pitched a complete game. She allowed nine hits, three runs and six strikeouts.

In the second game, Baylor snapped the Cougars' 21-game home win streak, taking a 7-3 decision over UH.

Houston was held to just seven hits in the loss.

In the third inning, Bush scored to give Houston their first run after Klinkert hit a double to bring her in. Nordstrom also added a run for the Cougars after a Wagner single brought her home.

Houston would be able to put up one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Nordstrom hit her 11th home run this season but it would not be enough.

Freshman Baillie Lott pitched the complete game. She is 6-3 in the circle this season. She allowed 12 hits, seven runs and had five strikeouts.

Houston will head to Tulsa, Okla., on April 19-20 for a three-game series against Tulsa in a Conference USA series. The Cougars will then return home to host a single game against Sam Houston State on April 23, a rescheduled game that was rained out on Feb. 20.
