Toll road cameras may be used to find suspects

HOUSTON On Tuesday county commissioners will vote to decide if the cameras used to catch toll road violators who breeze through without paying can also be used to find serious criminals. Officials with the toll road authority say only the license plate numbers of known suspects who have committed serious crimes against people, or who are involved in a missing persons case will be entered into the system.

Calvin Harvey with the Harris County Toll Road Authority explained, "The cameras will only be looking at certain plate we tell it to look for. It's not going to photograph any other cars unless it is a toll violation, but only look for cars we have told it to look for."

If the cameras see the plate, it will send out an alert to law enforcement. This type of technology has been used in other states, such as California, and overseas for number of years.
