HPD initiative considered huge success

HOUSTON The crime crackdown lasted two months and aimed for a 10% reduction in crime. It actually led to a 27% overall drop in crimes which included theft, aggravated assault, auto theft and burglary. The department credited a big part of the drop to community involvement.

Lt D.R. Atkins with the Houston Police Department said, "Without this sharing of information with the community we really can't help you effectively. Y'all know what's going on in your neighborhood. We need your help in order to address these issues."

HPD also announced a new crime prevention effort in Denver Harbor with the Precinct 6 constable's office and HISD police.
