Local teens witness NYC crane collapse

HOUSTON Alexis Boudreaux and Hazel Zamarripa were on a trip with the Houston Academy for International Studies this past weekend. The two were in a restaurant across the street when the crane collapsed and they saw a big cloud of dust go past the windows.

With sirens blaring and chaos all around them, the pair thought they were witnessing a terrorist attack.

"We overheard people talking about cranes falling on buildings," said Boudreaux. "We didn't know what happened until we got back to our hotel room and saw it on the news."

Six construction workers and a woman died in that accident. A preliminary investigation shows the crane collapsed when a steel collar fell and damaged another larger collar that anchored the crane to a building.
