UH working hard in spring practice

HOUSTON We all know you have to play defense to win, but offense gets folks to pay attention. Former coach Art Briles and his quarterback Kevin Kolb produced incredible numbers, but Sumlin will throw the ball even more.

"Especially on our side of the conference (C-USA), you know, with UTEP and SMU, Tulsa and all those guys throwing it everywhere. ... It's going to help our defense, too, to practice against it," Sumlin said.

Sumlin's offensive coordinator is Dana Holgorsen. He comes from pass-crazy Texas Tech.

"Ours is not much trickier. If you look at our tape back in our first year at Tech in 2000, it's identical to what it was in 2008. So, our stuff doesn't change much," Holgorsen said.

As a matter of fact, the Cougars are going to throw the ball so much, that the daily routine of the Cougar quarterbacks would make a major league pitching coach cringe.

"In all the drills and everything, somewhere around 225 (reps)," Holgorsen said.

Holgorsen was in Lubbock when Wes Welker played for the Red Raiders and last season, Welker gained national attention with the New England Patriots. But before you get too crazy, Holgorsen has the following warning:

"These guys' ball skills aren't very good right now, which means they can't catch. And so, we're just trying to get them better at that," Holgorson said.

But they will learn, and the result could be a lot of fun.
