Police chase ends with gunfire

HOUSTON The chase ended in northwest Harris County along Highway 290 near Mueschke. The chase started about 10:30am when Houston police say the suspect ran a red light at Gillette near West Dallas.

When Houston police started to chase the suspect, he led them north on I-45, then west onto I-610 before ending up on Highway 290 northbound. Authorities say the suspect, who has not been identified, made a u-turn, hit a stop sign and ran into a ditch. The suspect briefly tried to get away, driving into a wooded area. Then he tried to drive towards the officers who were standing nearby.

"Several of the officers were giving the suspect commands to stop, basically begging him not to continue forward," said Captain John Martin with the Harris County Sheriff's Department. "As the suspect began to try to accelerate forward, several of the officers opened fire. The suspect was struck multiple times."

Authorities say the suspect was shot at least six times by Houston police and Harris County deputies. The suspect was taken to Ben Taub Hospital by Life Flight and was last listed in critical condition.

It's unknown why the suspect was fleeing authorities, but he reportedly has a lengthy criminal history.
