"Since I've been here we haven't beaten Texas and it feels good to finally beat them," Smith said. "I always look to shoot and I was open tonight and knocked down a few shots."
Texas (16-9, 4-7) had won the last eight meetings between the teams.
Aija Putnina had 14 points and 15 rebounds for Colorado (14-11, 3-9). Jackie McFarland had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Brittany Spears had 12 rebounds and 3 points.
Colorado shot less than 33 percent from the field while Texas shot 35 percent. But CU outrebounded Texas 50-29. Colorado led 34-29 at halftime and extended the lead in the second half.
"This loss is inexcusable," Texas coach Gail Goestenkors said. "Colorado played with more passion and purpose. It was embarrassing. We had a lack of effort, focus, will and desire."
The win stopped a skid for a CU team that had won 11 in a row before losing six straight to fall out of the rankings of top 25 teams.
"To beat Texas, which is an incredible program, is huge for us," CU coach Kathy McConnell-Miller said. "I was very happy to outrebound Texas, which is such an athletic team. We're a very proud and happy team tonight."
Brittainey Raven had 16 points to lead the Longhorns in scoring.
