UH softball crushes Army in 5 innings

HOUSTON Through three games of the tournament, the Cougars have scored 24 runs after allowing just one to the Black Knights in Saturday's contest.

Freshman Bailey Lott (2-0) pitched the entire game striking out six batters, giving up two hits with one run and one error.

Junior Laurie Wanger saw her five-game hitting streak end during the Cougars win. Since the Coogs' 8-0 win over McNeese State on Feb. 9, Wagner was eight of eight at the plate including a home run.

Houston scored a run in each of the two opening innings of the game. In the third, UH broke it open with eight runs in the inning.

Houston gave up their first run of the tournament when Army's Laura Baranek scored on a wild pitch in the third inning. The Cougars would get their final three runs of game in the fourth inning and behind Lott's solid pitching would earn the win.

Houston moves to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 at the tournament while Army is 0-3 at the tournament and overall.

Rain delayed the final game of the afternoon. Houston will now face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1pm on Sunday to conclude the Crowne Plaza Classic.

During the morning games, DePaul defeated Army and Texas A&M-Corpus Christ 6-2 and 4-3, respectively.

The final day of the tournament will begin on Sunday at 9am. Houston will play the late games at 11am against DePaul and at 1pm against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
