Reveille VII retiring from service

COLLEGE STATION, TX The retirement of the purebred collie and revered school mascot was announced Wednesday after seven years as the most privileged pet on the Texas A&M campus -- and after building a reputation as an occasional troublemaker.

Texas A&M spokesman Jason Cook says the dog's advancing age and increasing appearance demands factored into ending her tenure as mascot.

Reveille is the highest-ranking member of the student Corps of Cadets, whose members are required to address the dog as "Miss Rev, ma'am." But Reveille VII didn't always behave in a manner fitting to her status.

The dog received obedience training during her tenure for biting cadets and barking excessively. But Cook says Reveille VII still served the university well.

The dog's last official day as mascot will be May 10.
