Deputy killed in wreck identified

HOUSTON The deputy was identified as 43-year-old Craig Miller. The deputy was on his way to a surveillance operation, traveling east on the I-10 service road, when he collided with a box truck near Mason.

The driver of the box truck, Jose Vieyra, was not seriously hurt. Authorities say Vieyra apparently failed to yield the right of way exiting the driveway of a Toyota dealership and crossed three lanes of traffic and into the path of Miller, causing the fatal accident. He has been charged with criminally negligent homicide.

The impact was so powerful that the deputy's vehicle overturned. It was standing straight up, hood-first against the median.

Several of the officer's colleagues showed up at the scene in disbelief over what happened.

"You can't say how big a loss it is, how big a loss it is for the sheriff's department family and his family too," said Major Juan Jorge with the Harris County Sheriff's Department.

Officers say Miller was a 20 year veteran of the department. His funeral plans are pending.
