Woman gives birth in hospital restroom

HOUSTON Police say Genny Granados, 29, went to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital around 11pm Saturday, complaining of stomach cramps. While in the emergency room waiting room, Granados reportedly went to the lobby restroom and gave birth.

Saying the baby wasn't breathing, Granados allegedly wrapped the baby in a paper towel and placed him in a trash can. After complaints, the cleaning crew went into the restroom and found the baby boy in the trash.

The baby boy was born nearly full term, at 34 weeks of gestation, weighing just under five pounds. Hospital staff was able to revive him. He's now on life support.

Granados remained at the hospital, being treated for stomach cramps.

"She still was complaining about pain, so she said she went back to the emergency room so that she could get medical attention," explained CPS spokesperson Estella Olguin. "That's when the baby was discovered by the cleaning crew. She was confronted about this and she admitted she had given birth."

It's unknown exactly how long the baby was in that trash can.

Granados has two other children – both boys, ages 10 and two years old. CPS officials say those boys were home alone. Those children have been placed with relatives.

Granados was discharged from the hospital Monday afternoon. She has been charged with injury to a child.
