It was around a 7pm last night when neighbors heard a plane circle low and then a crash. When emergency crews arrived, they found the pilot dead at the scene.
Investigators suspect he was trying to land the plane at the private airport RWJ. He crashed in a wooded area not far from the airport. Authorities say the fog in the area may have contributed to the crash.
"It was a densely wooded area, its moody out there," said Chambers County Sheriff Joe Larive. "The plane came in, took out several trees and demolished the plane and we have wreckage spread out pretty much over the wooded area."
Investigators believe the pilot was the only person on the plane. His identity hasn't been released.
Authorities are not exactly sure where he was headed. The FAA is now trying to sort those details out.
