DALLAS, TX Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries featured the piece at
its Natural History Auction. Another item, a 26-pound gold nugget
from Mexico known as the Boot of Cortez, sold for nearly $1.6
million, The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday in its online
edition.
The Volkswagen-sized mastodon skull, discovered in a gravel pit
in La Grange in 2004, received the most attention.
Joe Taylor, director and curator of the Mt. Blanco Fossil Museum
in Crosbyton, preserved and restored the piece with a team of
volunteers.
