Prison officials say around 7:30pm Sunday, Davis, 54, was with more than a half dozen other inmates at the prison basketball court in Rosharon. Then, without warning, he ran towards a fence at the Stringfellow unit and began to scale the chain link. He reached the top and actually got some of his clothing stuck on the rolled barbed wire.
A tower guard warned the inmate to stop, and then fired a single round, which missed Davis, but caused him to fall about 10 feet.
"The officer did an outstanding job by providing public safety by shooting the round at the offender," said Assistant Warden Alfonso James. "And also, we had our tracking dogs in case he did make it over. They were already set up to track the offender."
Officials say Davis suffered several broken ribs and a head injury. It's a good thing he didn't get out. Davis is serving a life sentence for a murder he committed in Brazoria County.
