Melanie's ulcerative colitis began when she was seven with stomach aches and occasional diarrhea. The symptoms continued off and on. The clinic, not knowing what it was, told her mother that "it's nothing, she will get over it." It still continued to be more frequent where she needed to lie down because of the stomach pain. Her mother requested a parasite test in 2001 and it came back negative. The colitis continued to worsen to where when she took a bite of food, she had to go directly to the bathroom and then to bed because of the pain. In January of 2002, Melanie was referred to Texas Children's Hospital, where she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.
