Texans elevate Shanahan to OC

HOUSTON The 28-year-old son of Denver coach Mike Shanahan replaces Mike Sherman, who spent two seasons with the Texans before being named the head coach at Texas A&M in late November.

Shanahan is almost three years younger than Josh McDaniels, the 31-year-old New England offensive coordinator who was previously the NFL's youngest to hold the job. Shanahan spent the last two seasons with the Texans, first coaching receivers coach and then quarterbacks.

The Texans also hired Alex Gibbs, who takes over the assistant head coach slot Sherman also held. The 66-year-old Gibbs most recently worked with Atlanta, first as an assistant and then a consultant for the previous three seasons.

The 23-year NFL coaching veteran was Denver's offensive line coach for 13 seasons, including when Texans coach Gary Kubiak was offensive coordinator there.

Shanahan will continue to coach quarterbacks as offensive coordinator.
