Hostage makes grisly discovery

HOUSTON (KTRK) But that wasn't the only tragedy at the apartment complex in southwest Houston. It began with a sexual assault.

Family members say the suspect definitely knew the victim.

Hours after his 29-year-old nephew was shot to death, the victim's uncle is still struggling after learning who police say did the shooting.

"They were so close and sometimes it happens like this," said Sam Williams. "Be real close and next thing you know, tragedy happens."

It happened this morning. Police went to the apartment where shots were fired. They found a young woman who claimed she had been raped at gunpoint.

Her boyfriend was identified by family members as Deval Andrews, 29. He was found dead in the backseat of his car. The suspect was held up inside the apartment.

After hours of negotiations, the suspect eventually surrendered. He turned out to be the victim's best friend.

Police aren't sure what led the suspect to allegedly shoot Andrews.

"I'm trying not to think about it right now," said friend Shameka Anderson. "What caused him to do it? Why would he want to do it?"

In the meantime, those who live in the neighborhood say the shooting is just another example of how the area is becoming dangerous.

"We've been residents for many years," said Patricia Matthews. "Now we are afraid to walk on our street, none of us go out at night."

For this crime, it left the father of a six-year-old boy dead.

Police say they are not releasing the suspect's name. He has not been formally charged with a crime.
