Students to be tested for TB

HOUSTON (KTRK) Health officials ordered the testing after a student at North Shore High School was diagnosed with tuberculosis just before the Christmas break. Letters went home with students at the school's 11th and 12th grade campus.

The sick student received treatment, has recovered and has been cleared to return to school. Health officials have identified 140 students who were close to the student -- classmates, friends, participants in extracurricular activities -- to be tested. The testing will occur during school hours on Monday.

No other students have shown any signs of TB to this point.

The body begins to attack TB bacteria two to eight weeks after an infection. TB mainly affects your lungs, so coughing is often the only indication of infection at first. Other symptoms include unintended weight loss, fatigue, a slight fever, night sweats, chills and a loss of appetite.
