Thief slams into store, steals goods

HOUSTON Investigators say the person smashed into the Citgo station on Kuykendahl near Haigshire in northwest Harris County around 2am.

Police say a driver was in a white Ford 4x4 truck and backed up into the store and then smashed through the brick wall. The person took off with a safe and lottery tickets. The owner says all together he's lost about $15,000.

"People I don't know why, maybe they needed it for drugs or maybe they were drunk," said store owner Usman Chundry. "I don't know they would take the safe I don't understand - I just hope they catch them that are all I am praying for."

This is just one of many smash and grab robberies authorities have seen in recent months. Investigators say there was a rash of them in October to mid November and then they had break.

Police think we will see more in the coming weeks as people face holiday debt, foreclosures, and high heating and gasoline bills.

The owner here hopes to have his store back open by tomorrow.

Deputies have not made any arrests.
