Children found alone in deplorable conditions

HOUSTON According to the Harris County Sheriff's department, a deputy arrived at the home on Barker Grove Lane to do a welfare check. When he got there, he found clothes and trash strewn everywhere. Children ages 1, 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9 were alone in the roach-infested home, with very little food.

While the deputy was there, a 15-year-old arrived at the house. She reportedly told the deputy she was left in charge. A 16-year-old lived there as well.

Neighbors have told the authorities the mother left the country to get married. The kids apparently had no way to contact her and were left to fend for themselves.

Two of the children found in the home are actually a neighbor's kids. He routinely left the children to be cared for by the mother during the day. He drops the children off outside, so he wasn't aware the woman was away.

The youngest child is being treated for dehydration. Children's Protective Services have taken custody of the three youngest kids. The mother will be charged with child endangerment.
