Workshop offers artists access to big equipment needed to create masterpieces

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- On the eastside inside 100 Hutcheson, creative minds like Heath Brodie were hard at work at Houston Markerspace. Brodie was making tables on Wednesday morning. Tomorrow, your guess about his next creation is as good as any.

"It's a space to come and be creative. Be able to create using the tools that are available," said Brodie."

For 150 bucks a month, artists like Brodie get the space to dream big with access to some heavy lifting tools. Founder Maclean Smyth gave Eyewitness News a tour. She compared the place to a gym for gifted creators.

"Instead of getting access to Pilates and treadmills, you're getting access to woodworking, screen printing, jewelry, metal working, laser cutting, etc," said Smyth. "We need more. My goal with Houston Makerspace is to encourage people to open even more Makerspaces. We could use one in Conroe. Maybe would could use one in Sugarland. Maybe we need one in Galveston."

Smyth and Brodie said the community feel often sparks motivation and inspiration.

"It opens up such a crazy world of possibilities for anyone of any ability which is great," said Brodie with a smile.
