Bald eagle euthanized after being shot in Anahuac area

CHAMBERS COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- A bald eagle was euthanized after it was shot in Chambers County, and deputies hope to find who did it.

Investigators said Tuesday a $1,000 reward is being offered for information about the shooter.

Texas Game Warden Dustin Dockery said it's likely the eagle was shot near the location where it was found.

"Due to the location and the trauma that the bird did receive, and getting the report from the veterinarian, it wouldn't have made it that far," Dockery said.

Killing a bald eagle is a federal crime. The species is protected under a federal statute.

Those convicted can pay up to a $250,000 dollar fine or spend up to two years in jail.

They could also face charges on the state level as well.

Chambers County Crimestoppers and the Texas Wildlife Commission's Operation Game Thief are each offering $1,000 dollar rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who they believe shot this bald eagle.
