School children band together to replace friend's bike
Students at Woodland Hills Elementary banded together to replace their friend's bike after she was struck by a car.

KINGWOOD, TX (KTRK) -- Fifth graders at Woodland Hills Elementary are proving that generosity is not just for adults.

Recently, 10-year-old Grace Cardenas was riding home from school when she was hit by a car.

"She rolled underneath the car and the vehicle ran over both of her legs," Grace's father, Luis, explained.

"It was scary and painful," Grace said.

Grace broke both her legs and fractured her pelvis. Friends visited her in the hospital, but didn't know how to help.

"They were very upset and grieving, in a sense, for their friend," said school counselor Cindy Babich.

The students came up with "Chores for Grace:" They did chores around their homes and their parents donated money.

Together, students raised more than $200; more than enough for a new bicycle and some extras, like a basket and a helmet, for Grace.

Grace hopes to start riding her bike again by January 1.
