THE WOODLANDS, TX (KTRK) -- The Woodlands is growing fast. Its population is more than 100,000 residents and its downtown-like Town Center is awash with construction cranes and new commercial space.

That growth is forcing the The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau to change its 2014 Fireworks Extravaganza.

Between the new office towers and the community's ubiquitous trees, the fireworks will launch from two locations along The Woodlands Waterway and last approximately 20 minutes.

"We've been diligent in working to identify the best fireworks viewing areas for this year's Fireworks Extravaganza," says Nick Wolda, president of The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Due to the construction of new office towers in The Woodlands Town Center, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to fire the larger fireworks displays as in year's past. The Woodlands Waterway has plenty of room for thousands of people to see the lower proximity fireworks at a closer and clearer view without the obstruction of buildings. Above all, attendees should plan ahead to pick out their spot."

The simultaneous displays, fired by Pyro Shows, will simulcast on the local radio station Sunny 99.1.

The CVB suggests the best locations for viewing the displays will be at Town Green Park, Waterway Square, and a host of points along the waterway.

"We know this will be a different show than The Woodlands is accustomed to seeing, but it's one that is needed at this time," Wolda said. "We'll continue to look in the years ahead to find the best and safest ways to deliver fireworks in celebration of America's Independence and many of our other events enjoyed by residents and visitors."

Pyro Shows will fire test shots in the half hour leading up to the 9:10 PM show, helping visitors make sure they have good views. Some of the popular viewing spots in past years, such as Northshore and Southshore Parks, won't be available this time.

The 17th annual show, which also includes food and festival activities beginning at 6:00 PM, is funded by sponsors and hotel occupancy taxes.
